Welcome to Jack Rotman's web page!!        (Jack Rotman at Lansing Community College)

General Education in Michigan

Who am I??

I have been teaching developmental math at Lansing Community College (LCC) for a number of years (over 30) ... it is a great job.  (If you like to help people, and can learn math, you might want to consider a career in teaching like me; you can ask me what the educational requirements are for teaching math in a community college, or see the links below for "AMATYC".)

The best things about my job are being able to help students and having really nice people to work with.  I also get variety in my work, and lots of challenges.  I am constantly learning more about people and learning.

DevMathRevival web site
This is one of my current major projects -- a blog on developmental mathematics.  "Redesign of developmental mathematics" is a major concern in our profession, and the purpose of this blog is to bring professional standards into the center of the conversation ... and to encourage us as a profession to do this difficult work.

New Life for Developmental Mathematics  web site
With the help of others across the country, we are designing and advocating for a new model of developmental mathematics ... one designed to meet our students actual mathematical needs, based on the work of other professionals to identify outcomes, and integrating the best thinking about teaching and learning.

Other Specialties ... What do I think I know a lot about??

Some things I have spent a lot of time learning over the years --

  1. Applications of algebra
  2. Language issues in learning algebra
  3. Retention of minorities and underrepresented groups in mathematics Minority Retention ... Issues and Resources

For language issues in learning algebra, I don't have a file of 'results' to show you.  I have presented on this topic at conferences, though it has been a while.  However, I use this background whenever I teach ... feel free to ask me more about this.

Want to read more about "retention of minorities"?  Here is what I have to offer Minority Retention ... Issues and Resources

Professional Information

I have worked with an organization called "AMATYC" (American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges).   See the web page AMATYC Web Page

I have chaired the Developmental Mathematics Committee of AMATYC; see the web page Committee web page

I have also worked with the state affiliate of AMATYC -- called "MichMATYC".  See the web page MichMATYC Web Page

I have also attended a number of other conferences over the years (NCTM, MAA, NADE, and others).  Ask me for more information on these.
